Beauty and Brains: Is RWN's "20 Hottest Conservative Women in New Media" List A Bad Thing?

Much ado has been made about Right Wing News releasing their second annual "Hottest Conservative Women in New Media" list. For example, Newsweek's David Graham comes down hard on conservatives who fail to condemn the sexist rankings while complaining about the left's treatment of Sarah Palin. This article, however, managed to draw my interest. Mediaite's Tommy Christopher makes some valid points about problems with the RWN list.

The list doesn't focus on the intelligence/content of these women's work. Aesthetics seems to be the only consideration. While I have no problem with men appreciating a beautiful woman, I think they do a disservice to these extremely smart, successful women by not point out at least some of their accomplishments.

No matter how enlightened we consider ourselves these days, women still have a large hurdle to overcome in getting men to take them seriously. Things like this don't help. By failing to acknowledge the immense talent and hard work these women have put into their careers, RWN has reduced them to simply a pretty face. That is a true disservice to all of these women.

RWN: A Rundown of GOP Senate Primaries

John Hawkins over at RightWingNews has a briefing up on all the key Republican Senate primaries.

Here's a teaser:

State: Indiana Election date: May 4. Seat currently held by: Open [Evan Bayh (D)] Candidates: Dan Coats vs. Marlin Stutzman vs. John Hostettler Latest Poll Numbers: Leaked internal poll (April 10, 2010): Coats 29% vs. Hostettler 26% vs. Stutzman 18% Candidate endorsement: Marlin Stutzman Analysis: Retired Senator Coats is a NRSC backed gun grabber who was supposed to step into the race, raise boatloads of money, and turn this into a horserace with Evan Bayh. However, Bayh isn't running, Coats' fundraising hasn't been particularly impressive, and his campaign has gotten a cold shoulder from the base in Indiana. Either Stutzman or Hostettler would be preferable to Coats in the Senate, but Hostettler is one of the worst fundraisers I've ever seen and the GOP won't be able to spend huge dollars this year to make up the slack. That means Stutzman, who has been endorsed by Jim DeMint among others, is the goto guy in Indiana. At the moment, polling data is very thin and this could be anybody's ball game.

RWN: Blogger Poll The Ultimate Like/Dislike Poll For People On The Right

Check out John's new poll over at RWN. He emailed over 260 right of center bloggers and asked them to rate 35 prominent people on the right. Some of the results will surprise you.

Here's a little tease:

Mark Levin, George W. Bush, Paul Ryan, Sarah Palin and Thomas Sowell were all on the Top 10 Most Popular List--can you guess in what order?

Bill O'Reilly, Meghan McCain, Ron Paul, Pat Buchanan and Lindsey Graham were all on the Top 10 Most Unpopular List--I think you'll really be surprised by the order on this one...

To see the full results and find out who the most loved and most hated conservative figures are, head on over to

RWN's John Hawkins Interviews Karl Rove

Fellow conservative blogger friend John Hawkins (of Right Wing News) interviews Karl Rove. He covers Sarah Palin, Waterboarding, Immigration Reform and more.
My favorite part of the interview:

Now there are a few people in public life who have ever been as demonized as you were during the Bush years. The left side of the blogosphere essentially looked at you the way some Christians view the devil. If anything they thought was bad for them happened, they blamed Karl Rove. Was any of this craziness getting back to you while you were in office and if so, what did you think? No, not really. I mean first of all, I had a job to do and in Washington, you can do your job or defend yourself. You can't necessarily do both -- particularly when you're a staff aide to the President. I knew part of it was to try and get me off my game and I wasn't going to let that happen. Besides, I worked with a lot of wonderful people who were very supportive -- and, I had a boss, an ultimate boss, the President of the United States, who said, you know, "better you than me" and really got me to laugh about it. It got to my family far more than it got to me. It's always harder to hear and see ugly things said about your kin than it is about yourself.
